When Monika seems to be callously dismissing this anomalous behavior, Natsuki secretly passes Serena a message under the guise of a poem that begs her to seek help for Yuri, only to be immediately manipulated into telling Serena to disregard the message and devote her attention solely to Monika. Yuri's decline insanity culminates in the act of giving Serena a "poem" that is indecipherable and covered in blood and other bodily fluids. During the day, the normally calm and shy Yuri becomes gradually unstable, possessive, and prone to self-harm. The next day, Monika takes Sayori's place and brings Serena back to the club. Realizing that something has happened to her, Serena rushes to Sayori's home, where he discovers that she has hanged herself. Soon, Sayori confesses her love for her and reveals to Serena hat she suffers from depression. As the club prepares for the school's upcoming cultural festival, Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki start to act weird.
Serena soon starts to love writing and sharing poems with her new club-mates and deepens her relationships with them. Serena reluctantly agrees to her proposal and meets the other members of the club: the assertive Natsuki, the shy Yuri, and the bubbly club president Monika. The latest commit on the GitHub page was on August 31st, 2018.Serena is invited by her cheerful childhood sweetheart, to join their high school's literature club as a remedy for her insular nature. As development went on, more members were recruited to the development team through applications (including five more writers, five artists, two editors and a composer), bringing the team total to 16 members. The DDLC Purist Mod began development in September 2017 shortly after Doki Doki Literature Club's release, initially with development members GarnetSunset, Tabuukilla, and Syzygy. The mod includes over 60 minutes of original soundtrack composed by Matt Twigg, consisting of 20 tracks, which released on the 22nd August 2018.
The mod includes several pieces of original art created by artists including Temachii and PeachCake as well as several others.
The DDLC Purist Mod added 11+ hours of additional playtime to the base game, with each girl having a full-length route with at least one good and one bad ending.
